This week was so fun due to all of the National Lutheran Schools week activities and the ski trip! I took a ton of pictures so be sure to scroll through them!
We have been acting in Literature as we study our drama unit and read the Phantom Tollbooth. The students have had a lot of fun with it and now we are watching the movie! Our next unit will focus on nonfiction. In English, we will move to Pronouns next. Science is all about solids, liquids, and gases. Lastly, in Art, we are working on pop hearts! On Wednesday, we were able to enjoy a pancake breakfast from the company "Chris's Cakes." It was so fun to watch the kids try and catch pancakes flying through the air. Thursday was the teacher vs. 8th grade volleyball game and the teachers still remain undefeated! The teachers also defeated the 8th graders in the pizza eating contest on Thursday as well. I don't know about your kids, but I am SORE from skiing on Friday! It was a beautiful day filled with a ton of fun! I noticed 44 happy faces on Friday zooming down the hills pretty successfully! I am a beginner as well and learned a lot from the guides at Hidden Valley. Skiing isn't actually that hard! We all looked like pros. Shoutout to all of the chaperones, we couldn't have done it without you! I definitely encourage you all to check out Mrs. Riemenschneider's blog because she also took pictures! Enjoy!

This week we had no school on Monday to celebrate MLK day, so it felt like it went by a lot quicker! Also, remember, next week is NLSW, so we have dress days. Monday is Tourist day, Tuesday is Holiday Day, Wednesday is Pajama Day, Thursday is Circle of Life Day, and then on Friday is our ski trip! Everyone is really excited! Don’t forget to dress for the weather. In English this week we kept learning about adverbs, along with the difference between good and well. (Make sure to have proper grammar when you talk to Mrs. Beaty! Or else!) On Friday we turned in our Camouflage art and started a project on pop art hearts. In Social Studies we started a new chapter on Tech Workers and Time Zones: India’s Comparative Advantage. We finished up our Chapter in Religion with a test on Thursday, and started a new section on Friday about humility. In Literature we continued discussing The Phantom Tollbooth, but will wrap it up with a test on Monday. During Science we also started a new chapter on Solids, Liquids, and Gases. And that’s another AMAZING week in our AMAZING classroom with our AMAZING teacher! ~Emma
Well, Emma did a great job covering it all for me! Thanks! I also can't wait to see the creative outfits students come up with for next week. In addition to dressing up, we will have a collaborative class devotion on Tuesday with another school located in Illinois (ironically also named Zion Lutheran). Then, on Wednesday, send your kiddos in hungry because we will have pancake breakfast after chapel around 10:30! :) Thursday is the teacher vs. 8th grade volleyball match and all week we will be studying and praying for the online mission in Peru! It will be a very fun week. Ski Trip Friday: Please note, it is looking colder for our Hidden Valley Trip. Although 2 layers (long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt) are good under your winter coat, be sure hands, heads, and feet are well covered. Socks with a blend of wool are much warmer. Snow pants, ski bibs, or a waterproof layer over leggings/long underwear/sweats etc. are better for legs. Here are other tips for the cold: Old Man Winter Here are some tips on how to beat the old fellow at his own game, while you enjoy the great snow conditions that usually exist when it is cold. -- Your head is an escape valve for more than 50% of your body heat. Keep your head and ears covered by a warm cap. Remove metal earrings. --Your face should also be protected. Use lotion to give your face protection from the wind and sun. You’ll be amazed how much warmer and comfortable you’ll feel if your face is protected. In fact, protecting your face can make a big difference in how you feel and how much you enjoy the day. Sunglasses also help protect the face and keep eyes from watering. --Your hands may be better protected by mittens than gloves. Perhaps the most important thing to know is that the rope tow will be very hard on gloves. Consider putting a cheap pair of work gloves over your regular gloves. --Your feet will be warmer with wool socks. Cotton socks will soon be wet from snow and perspiration and not help keep the feet warm. If you can’t wear wool socks, bring a spare pair and switch at lunch time. --Pant legs should be loose enough to fit over the outside of your plastic ski boots. Denim is not a warm material. It gets wet easily and lets the wind through. Ski bibs, snow pants, or a waterproof/quick drying outer layer are helpful. --Wear as many layers as you can. When you bend over, be sure you don’t come untucked at the waist. Loose clothing assists circulation. If the day warms up you can always remove a layer or two for comfort. Bring a light outer jacket or coat that you can wear all day. Your rope tow pass will be attached to it. Snowmobile suits generally don’t work well for skiing. This week we started Camouflage art on Friday. Everyone chooses a different animal, cuts them out, then hides them in plain sight using cut-outs from magazines, watercolors, markers, crayons, colored pencils, and glue. In Science we wrapped up or chapter on matter with a test on Friday. During English, we learned about adverbs, how they differ from adjectives, and how they tell where, when, and how. In Social Studies we also completed our chapter on Monsoons in South Asia with a test on Thursday. Remember that we have no school next week to celebrate MLK day. And that’s another AMAZING week in our AMAZING classroom with our AMAZING teacher! ~Emma
School this week was very fun and busy! We have been acting a LOT not only in Literature, but in Religion too! Here is our week! In addition to all of the fun stuff that went on, the students worked hard on lots of homework and had multiple tests as well! They are doing great and giving their best effort. I am so proud of them! New units: English - Adverbs Science - Finishing matter this week, on to solids, liquids, and gases next! Scholastic Book Orders: These are due by Friday at 5pm! We had a full week filled with activities! Here is what we did! This week was our Faith Family Chapel Activity. We learned about Bible Journaling. Bible Journaling is a way to gain a deeper connection to a Bible verse. The students made a bookmark with a verse and illustration. We then created butterflies to be used for our All School Cross for National Lutheran School’s Week. The activity time concluded with a get to know you game. What a blessing to be able to gather with different students around God’s Word and have fellowship that builds our community! Thursday and Friday during Science we did a density lab! The students measured the mass of different objects, volume of objects, and then used those numbers to calculate density. They discovered that the density of an object stays the same even when you break it in half! They got to experiment with lots of new tools like balances and graduated cylinders! It was a lot of fun! We started Second Steps back up on Thursday morning learning about bullying. We discussed different types of bullying and strategies on what we can do if someone else is being bullied.
