We had a pretty average week this week minus the fact that we still had a lot of students out due to sickness! We are still being plagued down in the basement of Junior high so please keep us in our prayers! Thanks to all the students who have been absent for their hard work to get caught up! STUDENTS: Be sure to check in with each teacher to be sure you have finished anything needed still as the quarter wraps up in 2 weeks. I appreciate the cooperative nature of this class in supporting each other and helping students understand concepts and lessons they missed. Praise God that He gives us our health!
Jump Rope for Heart occurred on Friday in the mid morning! The majority of our class participated! If you would like to see pictures, visit Mrs. Riemenschneider's blog! I had to stay back with the few that did not want to participate and we did a lot of cleaning! :) I saw a lot of happy and sweaty faces when the 6th graders came back though! They had fun! Scholastic Book orders are due Monday by 7pm!!! Reminders: Grandparent's Day forms are due Friday, March 2. They all need to be turned in telling us if your child is attending or not and who their special friend is. Yearbook orders are due March 2 as well. Cheer Clinic info: The Zion Lutheran Cheer Squad is hosting a Cheer Clinic on Friday, March 23 from 3:00-6:00 in the Zion Lutheran Gym. We will begin with a fun warm-up and then divide the girls into age groups where participants will learn age appropriate stunts, cheers, and correct cheer techniques. Participants will perform for parents, grandparents and friends at 5:45 in the gym. Each participant will receive a Zion Lutheran Cheer t-shirt. Registration is due by Wednesday, March 14 and you can turn the form in at the School Office. We encourage all 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade girls interested in cheering at Zion next year to attend. Another great week for the books! The kids loved the play, Bud, Not Buddy, that we attended on Friday. It was really cool to see only 8 actors/actresses play multiple parts! It was face paced and fun! I hope your child told you about it! Shoutout to Ali's mom and Kayla's grandma for chaperoning!
Wednesday was also a busy and fun day! We worshipped differently because of ash Wednesday and received ashes on our foreheads or hands. Ash Wednesday this year also fell on Valentine's Day which is awesome because God loves us the most! Shoutout to Mackenzie's mom and Logan's mom for helping with our quick party to celebrate the holiday. It is a really great thing to see that the whole class loves each other and helps each other out. I have watched a lot of new friendships form this year and it makes me very happy! And also, I love our class so much!! (Ask them about the weird Valentines I got them...I thought they were going to be much cooler whoops!) Reminder: If your child is out sick for 2 or 3+ days, bringing in completed homework when picking up the homework from that day would help Mrs. Riemenschneider and I immensely! We have had a lot of kids out for almost a week at a time and are now needing to track down assignments to grade! We also don't want the students to lose them with all of the other assignments from sick days. Thanks so much for your help! Jump Rope for Heart: Donations for JRFH are due February 26th. As of now, I have only four students who have donated. I know a lot of the kids like receiving some of the prizes that are offered with donations so be sure to have your child bring in their donation before the 26th! Box Tops: These are due February 21st! Bring them in if you have any! Magazines: If you have any old magazines at home and are willing to part with them, I need a good number of magazines for an upcoming art project we will do. Send them with your child! Thanks! Scholastic Books: Orders are due February 26th! Be sure to order online or send in paper orders to me before then! Note: Grandparent's Day permission forms were sent home Friday. They are due by March 2nd. Your child can be "adopted" by another child's grandparent or special friend but make sure to let me know so that everyone is accounted for! Labeling this week the flu since we had at least two kids sick every day this week! Make sure your kiddos are washing their hands and covering their mouths when they cough (I know I sound like a Kindergarten teacher but dang the sixth grade has been plagued!!)
Regardless of the sicknesses, we had a busy week! Here are our current units: English: Pronouns Science: Earthquakes, moving to Volcanoes next week! Literature: Nonfiction Religion: Jesus's Ministry In Literature on Tuesday, we tried something different where we lead discussion on Google Classroom! Students responded to questions that I posted on our Classroom. They also commented on each others' posts and had discussion that way. They really enjoyed it! On Wednesday, we had Faith Family prayer time with our groups. We were reminded to spend five minutes with God every day asking him for help, praising him, thanking him, and apologizing for any sins we have committed. It is always a great idea to talk to God every day! During Second Steps for the past two weeks, we have discussed drug abuse and prevention. Students have learned different ways to say NO to drugs with confidence. They have also learned all of the dangers different drugs have on the body. Students are encouraged to talk to you all about these different kinds of things. They will also be interviewing you on things we discussed in Religion today. We talked about fitting in and what it means to be out. But Jesus includes all of us no matter how "cool" we are. Be ready for these conversations! Grandparents' Day/Special Friends' Day! I don't know about your kids, but I am SORE from skiing on Friday! It was a beautiful day filled with a ton of fun! I noticed 36 happy faces on Friday zooming down the hills pretty successfully! I am a beginner as well and learned a lot from the guides at Hidden Valley! Skiing isn't actually that hard! We all looked like pros! Valentine's Day We have a small celebration and social time with snacks provided by our room mom. We do NOT do a full class valentine exchange, but kids are welcome to bring valentines for the whole class if they wish. Remember, please do not bring candy to share. Also, students were informed of Zion's school-wide policy of no gift exchanges on campus. Please refer to the family handbook on Sycamore documents tab. (Repeat) NEXT FIELD TRIP; FRIDAY, FEB. 16- Grendel Theater Bud, Not Buddy Bud, Not Buddy follows ten-year-old Bud as he sets off on an epic adventure to find his father who he believes is leading a traveling jazz band. Set in 1930s America, Bud’s odyssey is filled with the joy of finding family and plenty of live jazz music. Based on the Newbery Medal and Coretta Scott King Award-winning novel, this play combines 8 actors with a 13-piece jazz band performing an original score composed by five-time, Grammy-winning jazz artist Terence Blanchard to tell the story of a boy who finds a home and a passion for music. We are seeking 3 parents to attend with us. We will prepare to depart Zion by bus at 8:45 and return by 12:30, before lunch. Let me know if you are able to attend. Cell Phone Usage Another reminder from our Family Handbook: Students have been reminded that cell phone usage is not allowed without teacher permission. This includes at dismissal and After School Care. Zion's policy is below: Since emergency and necessary phone service is available to Zion students during the school day and at activities, all Zion students are discouraged from carrying cell phones on campus. Any students displaying, receiving calls, or using the cell phone in any manner will forfeit the phone until a parent retrieves it from the school office. Repeated inappropriate use of a cell phone may require action by the Discipline Committee. Grandparent's DayGrandparents’ or Special Friends’ Day is scheduled for Friday, March 9th from 8:00-11:00.
