Week 7 is complete! Here is what we did!
This week was a blast. On Monday we had PE and choir same with Wednesday. On Tuesday and Thursday there was band and music. On Friday we kinda of had a half day. We had half of a normal day, then in the afternoon shazam walk a thon with the whole junior high. JJ hurt his knee. ~Grace H and JJ For the last few week, our sixth graders have been writing and working on personal narratives. We have been learning different writing strategies to become better writers. Throughout the year, writing will be sprinkled in along with grammar in English class. I am excited to show you their first writing assignment during Parent/Teacher conferences! We have continued talking about the different parts of the Old Testament in the Bible, specifically focusing on the prophets and now moving to the Gospels. In Literature, we have been discussing inferences, symbolism, and fact/opinion. We will soon be watching "The Prince and the Pauper"! A movie in black and white! How fun! Lastly, in Science, we finished up our Magnetism chapter and will start our last electricity/magnetism unit: Electromagnetism. Friday was the winner of the week that was filled with lots of fun activities. In the afternoon on Friday, we held our Walkathon! Our prayers were heard as the weather was absolutely perfect! I noticed a lot of sixth graders running while the others walked and still got to five or six miles! Our class total mileage was about 127 miles!! The kids really enjoyed this event and were excited to raise money for two great causes! The pledges are due by October 7th so your kids can still try to raise money up until then! Look for a small manila envelope that students brought home today to fill up with the donations! Pics below! Tip of the Week: Double check that your child is emptying out his or her Friday Folder each Friday. I've noticed that some of these folders are PACKED with papers from previous weeks. Go through these papers with your child and notice all of the hard work they have put into this first quarter so far! New Policy: In order to provide a safe environment for our junior students, you are asked to check-in at the main school office and receive a Junior High Visitor’s Pass before requesting entrance at the junior high. In most cases the school office will ask you to leave forgotten items in the school office rather than interrupting students and teachers. Thanks for keeping the kids safe! REMINDERS: - Picture retake day is next Wednesday, October 2nd. - Trunk or Treat is October 4th! - No School October 10-11th! Next week is OCTOBER!!! Enjoy this amazing Fall weather and last few days of September! :)

This was a strange week. We had a half day on Wednesday. On Thursday and Tuesday we had a science lab. On Friday we had a field trip to Weldon Spring Interpreter Center. We had a scavenger hunt and learned about electricity. Also this week we found out that Mrs. Graham has no more signs of cancer.
By: Grace H and JJ H What a wonderful day we had for our field trip despite the hot weather! The students learned more about local history and environmental clean up through a fun scavenger hunt and a lesson on renewable energy. We even tried generating our own electricity with small models of windmills and solar panels! We had TONS of fun bowling, too. A special thanks our parent chaperones and to the crew who were so patient with those crazy kids. They were good sports! Thursday, we had a new Second Steps lesson about considering others' perspectives. In order to empathize with others, we have to understand and consider all possibilities that the other person might be experiencing. Knowing how to do this might decrease conflict and build stronger relationships. Religion: The structure of the Bible and God's covenant promises English: WRITING Personal Narratives, GRAMMAR Nouns Literature: Fiction and Nonfiction with an emphasis on fact/opinion and symbolism Science: Magnetism I know in Social Studies that the kids will put on a weather skit soon! See next week for pictures! WALKATHON: The walkathon is next week on Friday!! I hope the kids have found many people to pledge money to the cause. Potential people who could pledge include family members, friends, Zion families without a kid at Zion anymore, or your kid can pledge money themselves! The afternoon is going to be filled with fun activities! The kids are allowed to wear dress down clothes which includes athletic bottoms (appropriate length) and a Bobcat Spirit shirt. Bring sunscreen and a hat to wear because we will be outside for awhile. We will have lunch in the classroom. Make sure their lunches have no peanut products since there won't be a peanut free table. Hot lunch will still be served as well! Scholastic Book Orders: I am placing the next order on October 16th. Make sure to have orders in by then using my class code: R6TZX! A lot of students have been talking about it and are interested in getting books so make sure to talk to them as well! AR Points AR is due October 21st and each student needs 16 points. If you are curious how many points your kid has, make sure to visit the AR HomeConnect website located in my Websites tab at the top. REMEMBER: AR counts as 1/3 of the Literature grade! If students receive 20, 50, or even 100 points, they can receive a No Homework Coupon too! This week was an adventure. On Monday we had a power outage which was out for about an hour an a half. We also had a guest speaker for science. On Tuesday we had Library. Wednesday, we had chapel, and for chapel we had a guest speaker. He talked about back to school supplies. We had a religion test on Thursday. ~ Ella
Another week has flown by! We had more tests so I know they studied lots! We have used Kahoot, Plickers, and even a Monster game to review the concepts we needed to know for the tests. These are all very fun games to prepare the students so ask them about it! This week was the beginning of our new unit in English. We are starting Chapter 2: Nouns. I have also introduced writing into our English class and have started working on our first writing project, personal narratives. Tuesday and Wednesday we learned about great hooks for our stories and practiced writing them at the beginning of our narratives. On Monday, we had an Electrician from Cuivre River come by and discuss energy conservation! They learned about cheaper products like LED light bulbs and about how companies like Cuivre River produce electricity for our homes! Joe was a great teacher to the students and kept them entertained the whole time with his funny stories! Here are our next units in each subject: Religion: The structure of the Bible and God's covenant promises English: WRITING personal narratives and Chapter 2: Nouns Literature: Fiction and Nonfiction with an emphasis on fact/opinion and symbolism Science: Magnetism MID QUARTER GRADES Mid-Quarter is just around the corner! With this in mind, take a minute to check your child's grades. They should be all up to date by Monday at the end of the day. If you question a grade, please make sure to ask your child first before contacting me. There is a 99.9% chance they already know why a grade is the way it is. Also, keep in mind that if a student has more than 2 D's, they are ineligible to play any sports. WALKATHON Double check to make sure your child is finding pledges for the walkathon! The pledge sheet isn't actually due until after the Walkathon so they can continue to find pledges until the event! All proceeds go towards The Birthday Party Project, a great cause! Field Trip on FRIDAY! Please make sure your child is dressed for weather (currently high 80s with rain, hopefully it doesn't rain so please pray for good weather!). Every student needs to bring a cold lunch with them as well. Students can wear a red Zion t-shirt and with jeans or school pants (NOTE CHANGE: SHORTS are OK - NO SKIRTS). Let me know if you have questions. Parent drivers meet outside in front of JH to meet your riders. We depart by 8:40 to return to campus around 2:30 p.m. Students will gather back in classrooms to wrap up our week. Thanks to my parent driver volunteers! SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS: I noticed a few parents sending in orders online! If anyone else is interested in ordering books for their child, visit Scholastic and use my class code R6TZX. Please order by September 16th (Monday!). REMINDER: Half day on Wednesday, September 18th. Dismissal is at 12PM. Has it really been almost a full month of school?? I cannot believe it! Lots happened in this very short and quick week!
This was a great week of school. We got Monday off for Labor Day, so it was only a four day week! In P.E. this week, we played volleyball. It was very fun. We had a tornado drill on Wednesday during P.E. Ms. Preusser’s class made tessellation art projects in Mrs. Riemenshcneider’s room. On Friday, we had an assembly to announce the junior high walk-a-thon. That was our very fun week! ~ Brendan and Ella Thursday, we continued Second Steps and talked about how to work together in a group and reading people's emotions and body language. I really think these lessons are helping with student to student cooperation as well as active listening skills and respect for the teacher. All week long, we have been reviewing and practicing our English concepts to prepare for the test we had on Thursday. I'm confident they did well and excited to see the results! It was a quick week for sure and I'm sure next week will be the same! Junior High Walkathon Friday morning, we had our Walkathon kickoff. Ask the kids what they will be doing for this awesome event! If they can't remember, here is the low down. Our Walkathon is going to be September 27th. The kids have to find people who will pledge a certain amount of money for every mile that child runs/walks. We are raising money for The Birthday Party Project this year. On the day of the Walkathon, we will be outside from about 12:30 to 2:30 walking and running laps! There will be a water/popsicle station, snack shack, and lots of other free and fun goodies the kids will get! It will be an awesome day! PRAY FOR GREAT WEATHER! If you have any questions about this event, let me know! More info will be sent out closer to the event! For now, help the kids find people who will pledge money to the cause! Thanks! Upcoming Field Trip: On Friday, Sept 20 we head to Weldon Spring Interpretive Center to learn about energy, environmental clean up, and stewardship of our natural habitats. After a picnic lunch we head to Harvest Lanes to bowl. We are in need of parent drivers to join us for the day, from 8:40 - 2:45. Please email me if you are interested in chaperoning with how many students you could drive. You will need a current driver background check. Contact Michelle Thomason in the church office to see if you need an update. [email protected] Further information and permission slips will come out as the date approaches. High Ropes: Jr. High students have the opportunity to participate in our annual trip to Camp Wartburg for their high ropes course on Saturday, September 28. This will be an all day event from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The cost for this trip is $25 per student and permission forms are located in Mr. Braddy's classroom. Please turn in forms to Mr. Braddy by Friday, September 14. |
