HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving break! I will be staying in St. Louis, hanging with my husband, and eating all the FOOD! I am so thankful for my fourth year of teaching at Zion and especially thankful to have your kids as my students! I am also thankful to have wonderful parents to work with and ensure growth for the kids! A big thank you goes to you! Make sure you tell your child that I am thankful for them as well. :) We have had a great year so far and I look forward to the rest of the year too. Thanks to the numerous donations we received for our Thanksgiving food drive! The seminary families are so grateful every year for a box full of Thanksgiving food. In Religion this week, we made plans with a partner to meet once a week to have a five minute devotion, prayer, or chat about our faith. They are also working on writing their own devotion to share with the class too. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend a few minutes a week with God and with a friend! Midquarter: This past week marked the midpoint of 2nd quarter. It is a good time to talk with your child about the Friday papers that came home, check grades on Sycamore, and help them set goals for the 2nd half. A great goal? READ over the break! Get those AR points before the January 11!!! And your kids are not too old to read with you. You can model fluency and have great conversations over books. Traveling? Listen to audio books in the car. Christmas Decor Have any old Christmas decorations you are getting rid of? I would love to start a great collection for my classroom! I only have a few things and could really use just about anything to make my room more Christmas-y. Thanks! Scholastic Book Orders I will be ordering on December 2nd, the last order of 2020! Double check with your child if they would like to order any books. This would also be an excellent gift idea for your kids or others! I can be sure to hide any books that will be given as gifts and notify you when they come in! Remember our class code is: R6TZX.

This week we started our Christmas art which will take three weeks to make! Our next writing project also started this week. It will be an opinion essay. Our first big junior high project we started on Wednesday. It will be a replica of a cell. ~ Abbey and Caroline
Here are our new units! In Science, information on their CELL PROJECTS came home. Be sure they show you!!! Parent signatures due MONDAY. This year is different and all cell creations will take place AT SCHOOL rather than on their own at home. Parents will eventually need to help their students find supplies to use to build their cell. In Religion we began our New Testament study looking at God's perfect timing (in Greek: Kairos) as we learn about the birth of the Savior. The world under the Roman Empire was readied for the spread of the Good news! Students are being encouraged to partner and create devotion time to help grow in their relationship with God. What a wonderful opportunity to share stories of your own faith walk with your child! In Social Studies, we are exploring the Human Environment interaction with the Great Lakes Ecosystem. Students held a lively debate on the state of the lakes and will go on to investigate other environmental issues around the U.S. and Canada. In Literature, we are working with character development and motive. T-Math finish onestep equations next week and G-Math continue their pre-fraction work with Prime Factorization and GCF. We are finishing up Verbs in English and starting a new writing project, Opinion Essays! You can help set a Guinness World Record: The World Sport Stacking Association is attempting to set a new Guinness World Record this year for “The most PICTURES of people Sport Stacking”. Due to Covid restrictions and the impossible task of disinfecting our stacking cups after each use our First through Sixth graders will not be working on our stacking skills at Zion. However, if you have Sport Stacking cups at home I encourage you to pull them out and submit some photos of you stacking. The event takes place between: November 18th - December 2nd. Register TODAY! Visit https://stackup.speedstacks.com/register/ and sign up for this year’s event! Please email [email protected] if you’d like to borrow a set of cups in order to participate. If you’d like to purchase official sport stacking equipment go to Speedstacks.com. They often have some great deals around Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Food Drive: Food drive donations need to be at school by Wednesday, November 18th. Students can start bringing in donations on Monday and Tuesday. Sixth grade has been asked to donate toiletry items and kitchen/bathroom supplies. Students thoroughly enjoyed the Metro Theater play this week as well as learning about the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement. We had a good discussion about how we are all children of God and through His love, we can be respectful and celebrate each other's differences.
Watching a drama led right into our own acting. In Literature, we have been learning how writer's develop characters. We turned the story, "Dragon, Dragon" into a drama to help illustrate character traits and enact a plot. With the beautiful weather, we were able to take our acting outside. It is so fun to see these kids work together and let their personalities shine! THANKSGIVING DRIVE The drive for the Seminary is Wednesday, Nov. 20. Junior High is asked to donate Non-Food Items – Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Lotion, Body Wash, Shampoo, Conditioner, Sponges, Cleaning, Supplies, Kitchen Supplies, etc. All is appreciated! Scholastic Book Orders I will be ordering on November 11th. Double check with your child if they would like to order any books. They would probably come in before Thanksgiving break which would be a great time for some reading! This would also be an excellent gift idea for your kids or others! I can be sure to hide any books that will be given as gifts and notify you when they come in. I will order once more in mid-December for this semester. Remember our class code is: R6TZX. |
