What a fun filled week before break! We had a combined PE on Thursday with both 6R and 6P. Mrs. R joined in too! We finished up our Santa stories in English and got to enjoy reading each others' on Kidblog! Ask your child to show you their story! They are SO creative!
Also, congrats to our own Zachary for getting 2nd place in the geography bee! Friday was the best day of the week! We started out with chapel lead by 8th grade and Kindergarten. The Angels Undercover taught us that there are many people in the world that do not know the GOOD NEWS of Christmas. The 8th graders and Kindergarteners did an excellent job spreading the joy of Christmas! After chapel, we had our Christmas party! The kids had a lot of fun playing games like Headbandz and Bingo! We had lots of pizza, cupcakes, and hot cocoa to enjoy during our party as well. THANKS SO MUCH to our room parents that helped out!!! Y'all are WONDERFUL! I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and enjoy the season of Jesus's birth! I hope I see you at church sometime this break as well! Merry Christmas!! NEW YEAR REMINDERS: - School resumes Thursday, January 3. Report cards will come home on Friday, January 11. - Winter break is a great time to read!! - Our ski date is Feb 1. Email me if you are interested in driving. Please indicate if you would wish to ski in the afternoon (staff only during the morning lessons). Also let me know how many students you could drive. If we have too many volunteers to chaperone, I will draw names.

This week we started our creative writing Santa stories! Each para has a different tense. In science, we started learning about volcanoes. In Lit, we worked on a Among the Hidden “mini project.” We had the choice to either do an alternate ending, Luke as an adult, plug the movie, a commercial, or adding a new character. In art, we studied Rockwell’s work and tried to create a masterpiece like it. On Friday is the Winter dance from 7:30 to 10:00.! Everyone is super excited! ~ Emma
One more week and then it is Christmas break! Here's what we did this week! Monday: Finished the book Among the Hidden and started a project that included different creative options for the kids! Tuesday: We talked about the 12 Disciples in the morning and set up our Christmas Art for the display that lasted all week! EVERYONE did an amazing job! Wednesday: We started a writing project in English. The kids are writing Santa stories that include one paragraph in the present, one in the past, and one in the future. The students are coming up with some really creative stories and I can't wait to read them! We also went to another Advent service where the 3rd and 4th grade hosted an excellent Advent message to all! Wednesday after school, 6 volunteer sixth graders, two mom volunteers, and I went to Christian Friends of New Americans to deliver our Welcome Kits we assembled last week. They were so grateful for this donation and the kids had a lot of fun touring the place and getting McDonald's afterwards! (Pics below) Thursday: We had a lab on the viscosity of liquids! We got to get sticky with different liquids like honey, soap, syrup, shampoo, and water! Friday: The kids were able to present their projects on Among the Hidden and they were awesome! Overall, a well done job by all! Friday night, I went to the Junior High Dance to party it up with the kids! They seemed to be having such a blast, regardless of the heat kicking on for 20 minutes! They all were dancing the night away and drinking too much soda! It was awesome to see them all getting along and interacting with each other OFF SCREEN for once! :) Check out the pictures I snagged! Heads Up! Two important forms will be coming home on Monday. One is a permission form to view "The Nativity Story" movie on Thursday and Friday of next week. The other is one of many flyers about our upcoming field trip to Hidden Valley! Be on the lookout for these two forms! Absences: If your child has been absent, be sure to have him or her check in with each teacher on Monday to be sure we have all of your makeup work as we end the quarter on Friday. I am sometimes delayed at getting grade updates into Sycamore even after a student has submitted work, so it's good to have your child check in with me. Also since the student has missed instruction, the teacher can touch base and see if they have questions. Early Dismissal on December 22nd and Christmas Party!: We will have our Christmas Party on Friday that our room moms are working hard on. School is a half day that day ending at 12pm! Then we are off for a week and a half!! Our Advent Service was a huge success! The kids had so much fun practicing, singing, performing, and spreading the wonderful message of Jesus's love to all on Wednesday! I was so proud of all students! I could tell they were really excited to be together during this special time. I snagged a few pictures before the night service started so enjoy those posted below!
We are finally getting back into a normal schedule without having to practice for Advent anymore. However, on Friday, we had a special schedule again because we spent Friday morning packing boxes full of supplies for Christian Friends of New Americans! We used the money we raised during the Walkathon to buy supplies and were now able to get together and assemble them! The kids also wrote a special note to send to these children. The kids had a great time and I know Christian Friends will love our donation!! Thursday we received the opportunity to meet up with our Buddy class for the first time! We are paired with Mrs. Lohman's preschool class this year. On Thursday, we read books to the little ones and played Freeze Dance! Check out the cute photos! Here is an update on our current units! English: Finishing verbs soon! Then we will start a mini writing project to finish out the semester. Science: Moving on to chapter 3 to talk about Volcanoes! Literature: We finished our novel yesterday and the kids LOVED the book. I hope they read the rest of the series too! Religion: We have been exploring Jesus's life and focusing on his baptism and when he was tempted by the devil in the desert. We have been comparing these events in Jesus's life with our own experiences! We have also been watching the Matthew account of Jesus's life on DVD! Junior High Dance: Student Council sponsors a dance next Friday, Dec. 14 from 7:30-10:00j for Zion's junior high. This is a social mixer in the Commons and a chance for kids to get together for a time of fellowship, snacks, and fun. Students have already been informed that this is not a "date night" nor should they "ask" anyone to go as a "date." Students who choose to attend hang out with lots of different people. Mr. Debrick will talk with the sixth graders next week about how they are getting older and learning more about socializing in positive ways - face to face and not from behind a screen. One of my favorite parts of his talk is when he lets kids know that just because they dance with someone, they are not "getting married." We all have a good laugh, but it also helps kids understand they are learning how to act around each others as boys and girls. Please take this opportunity to tell your child about your first dance and what your values and expectations are for them. (and no - they don't HAVE to go!!) I think it costs $5?? Ask your kid! Christmas Service Project: Students today packed Welcome Kits for Christian Friends of New Americans. Funds reserved from our Walkathon purchased kit items and students had a chance to write encouraging words in personal greetings to go in each bag. CFNA is also looking for donations of NEW or GENTLY USED BLANKETS. If you are able to donate, please send blankets in a bag by Tuesday. Our delivery to CFNA will take place next week with a few volunteer students/parents. Christmas Art: The sixth graders have been working really hard on their Christmas paintings. They will be displayed next week, December 11-13 and would love to have even more viewers! Come see their art displayed in the elementary school hallways! Weather Announcement: We are finally into the really chilly months! Remind your child to bring a coat, hat, and gloves to school so they aren't freezing at recess! SAVE THE DATE!! Our Hidden Valley Ski Date is set for February 1. Watch for early information to come home next week. |
