This week in literature, we learned about short stories. In gym, we did cup stacking. In religion, we watched the movie Luther and learned more about the reformation. In science, we learned about Earth’s interior, continental drift, and seafloor spreading. In social studies, we learned about the different regions in Canada and their way of life. In G-Math, we learned about factors and divisibility rules. In T-Math, we reviewed isolating the variable. In english we learned about verbs. That’s a week in our classroom! ~ Lily and Madalyn
This week was Ribbon Week so it was definitely full of fun! Here is what we did: Monday was Red, White, and Blue day and unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to take pictures. Tuesday was Sports day, Wednesday was superhero day, Thursday was Crazy Hair day, and Friday was spirit day! And the best part of the week.....our class WON the door decorating contest!!! We are going to have a party next week to celebrate!! WOOO! See all of the fun pictures down below! On Friday, we had our harvest party. The sixth graders were sad to learn that harvest parties in junior high are not as long but they still enjoyed their time! We had lots of yummy treats to eat, music to dance to, and a photo booth! Veteran's Day Service: Friday, November 9, 2018 8:15 - 8:45am in the church sanctuary Zion Lutheran Junior High conducts a Veteran's Day service every year, and we are excited to extend an invitation for anyone to join us. The Boy Scouts will conduct a flag ceremony, and following the service all Veterans are invited to stay for a group photo and accept our appreciation for their service. NOVEMBER 14 CHAPEL OFFERING Thanksgiving Drive for Seminary Students Junior High will be focusing our offering on NON-food items to help stock the shelves at the Seminary pantry: Toothbrushes/toothpaste, lotion, body wash, shampoo/conditioner, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies. World Sport Stacking Day: This event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018. Superhero Offering We are blessed to have the opportunity to share Jesus with those who need Him. On Wednesday, we collected 292 Superhero toys in memory of our friend, Drew Albritton. The superhero items will be given to Friends of Kids with Cancer, a local organization, and will GO to kids in treatment for cancer. Even with a three day week, we packed it full of fun learning opportunities.
I am so glad I was able to meet with all parents and all students this week as well! Thanks for making it to the conferences on Thursday! The creation museum visited our school on Tuesday and Wednesday this week! We had the opportunity to explore this mobile museum and learn about dinosaurs as a part of God's creation! Kids were given a phone that they plugged their headphones into, and walked around to the different exhibits and listened to the audio tour on a phone! Technology is sweet! It was very cool to see and hear about! Here are our current units: Religion: Reformation English: Verbs Science: Inside Earth Literature: Character Sketch Red Ribbon Week: Starting next week! On Wednesday, December 5 at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m, grades 5 and 6 will lead the first Advent worship services at Zion Church. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students as they help our congregation prepare for the Lord's coming. Attendance is expected at both services, so please mark your calendars now and keep the date open. Let me know of any conflicts right away as parts will be assigned soon. We are eager to begin preparations for leading worship as December will be here before we know it. During the coming weeks, all students will learn songs selected to reinforce their message. Students will also have opportunities to try various roles in the service, such as special drama, music, or “behind the scenes” parts. Part of our Memory Work assignments will shift focus to learning songs and lines. Students will also have an opportunity to share their special musical talents. Any student who has had two years of music lessons or is in the Concert Band may offer to play for the services. Selections must be: 1) sacred music related to the Advent or Christmas seasons of the church year 2) practiced and ready to audition the by the second week of November. Scholastic book orders Next order is being placed on October 26th! Make sure to order online through our class! What a wonderful day we had for our field trip despite the cold and wet weather! The students learned more about local history and environmental clean up through a fun scavenger hunt and a lesson on renewable energy. We even tried generating our own electricity with small models of windmills and solar panels! We had TONS of fun bowling, too. A special thanks our parent chaperones and to the crew who were so patient when their lanes were malfunctioning. They were good sports!
We did have a couple of tests this week as we wrap up Quarter 1! I cannot believe we have already made it through a whole quarter! Time flies! We have been working and studying hard and learning lots! Students finished their Texture burger projects on Friday and they look AWESOME! Here is an update on our current units! Religion: new unit on the Reformation! English: finishing nouns and will be moving to verbs. Science: new unit on Inside our Earth! Literature: The Prince and the Pauper Character sketch Memory: Starting a new packet for Quarter 2! It is PINK. On Wednesday, we had our first Faith Family Prayer time. We split our faith families into small groups led by our junior high kids. They were the ones to lead the prayer and discuss how we ask God for HELP. On Thursday, we had a Cross Country send off as they head to state this weekend! See the pictures below! We also got to have gym outside we played kickball boys v.s. girls. girls won yay!!!!!! In T-Math we learned about dividing decimal also and we also had a test on Friday. In G-Math, we learned more algebra. In English, we learned about different kinds of nouns. In social studies we had a test about different kinds of maps. In science we learned about electricity and electromagnetism. In Literature, we read 1 story and had a test on Friday. This week in music class we played the ukulele played the song rip tide and other great songs. We also got to bring home our ukeleles home. In choir, we had a test about all the songs we practiced. There was 7 songs!!!!! In band we practiced more instruments. In band We played a shaker trilogy, peace like a river, fanfare and fugue and a childhood hymn. We played two more songs for band they were rippiling watercolors and greenbrier march. That’s what we did this week yay! ~ Lily and Madalyn
Only one more week until first quarter is over! Here is what we did this week: Religion: Our study of what is in the Bible continued today with a look at the Epistles. Knowing audience and author's purpose helped see the important messages the apostles had for early Christians and us today. We wrap up this unit next week. 2nd Step: Students learned about respectful disagreement and had to role play a couple of scenarios. Literature: Completed our unit on Fiction/Nonfiction with a look at author's perspective, tone, inferences and symbolism. We read a character sketch of Mark Twain written by his 13-year-old daughter, Susy. This will lead into writing our own character sketches as we begin viewing The Prince and the Pauper. English: We started a new English unit on nouns. This unit will be a quick one! Science: We are about finished with our first Science book on Electricity and Magnetism. The students are learning how electricity and magnetism work together to help us in the world today. Next quarter, we will start a new book over a new topic! Art: We are building our texture burgers! Can't wait to see how they will turn out! Parent Teacher Conference day. Oct. 18 is the day to meet! I look forward to sitting down with you to talk about your child! You will receive an email on Monday to sign up for a time through Sycamore to meet with me. In Junior High, we sign up with the homeroom teacher for a 15 minute conference. Be aware as you schedule that if you have children in different buildings that you allow "travel time." Field Trip Reminder: Friday Oct. 12 Please remember to pack a cold lunch that day (no peanut products, please). Students should wear jeans with their Red Zion shirt. We will hike the disposal cell in the morning when the weather is chillier, so dress appropriately! I am so thankful for the help our class has received from parent drivers! Lexi's mom, Emma's dad, Lucy's mom, Madalyn's mom, Seth's mom, and Addie's mom will be our drivers and chaperones for this field trip to Weldon Spring Interpretive Center and St. Charles Lanes. 1Plan to meet in the front of JH at 8:30. I'll send an itinerary for drivers home next week.! AR AR is due this Monday, the 9th. Check AR HomeConnect to see if your child has all of their points! Almost everyone is there! We need 16 points per quarter. Picture Makeup Day Oct 11 If you would like your child to get their pictures retaken, it is occurring on October 11th. I am very excited to start my 6th year of teaching here at Zion with the kids! Some of my hobbies include volleyball, card games, and reading suspense novels.
