What a fun filled week we had in 6P! Our first full week has flown by and the kids were awesome. We started out this week on Monday experiencing the amazing solar eclipse! Our sixth grade partnered with Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders as buddies for a variety of activities. I received SO many compliments about how helpful our sixth graders were to the little ones. My class said they had a blast and loved helping out!
On Monday, August 21, the Solar Eclipse was in Missouri. We did tons of fun activities from 11:30-1:30. They had stations and the 6th graders looked like they had a lot of fun. The Solar Eclipse started at 11:59 and ended at 2:30. Totality was at 1:12 and hopefully you saw the Solar Eclipse too! On Wednesday we had chapel and sang our new theme song, "In Christ Alone." On Friday we had art where we have to make different kinds of fish made from glue. ~written by Cade We now have a full week under our belts and a sense of how classes and transitions go. We are getting better each and every day with these things along with travel to and from classes, organization, and turning in homework. They also are understanding and learning the importance of responsibility and what it means to be a sixth grade student at Zion. These kids absolutely love their classroom jobs and being helpers whenever possible! They have been such a great help for when things start to get crazy! We started our Second Steps program on Thursday. We learned the importance of working in groups, different ways to communicate in groups, and empathy. These simple life skills are always important and I think the kids enjoyed learning about them as well. On Friday, we welcomed Mrs. Carol Martin into our grade as she taught them the importance of prayer and using Bible verses as a starting point for prayer. They will write a prayer that will be read over the PA on Wednesday mornings! How exciting! Our first units for each subject are as follows: Religion: What is the Bible? Social Studies: Mapping Skills Math: (for both classes) Place Value, Basic Operations, Properties of Addition/Multiplication Literature: Fiction/Nonfiction English: The Sentence and its pieces Science: Electricity and Magnetism Art: Line, Space, Texture Absences: It made me so happy to see how many fellow classmates supported Erica and her family on the day of her father’s celebration of life. The support system at Zion is so strong and this will be very helpful to Erica in the days to come. With that being said, students will be absent throughout the year for various reasons. As a reminder, in Junior High, the teachers collect assignments throughout the day for the absent student and will have this absent work ready to be picked up IN THE CLASSROOM at the end of the day. It is not feasible for us to run homework to siblings or the office. In general, students have 2 days for each day absent to make up homework up to 3 days. Any assignments requested in advance are due upon return. (Please refer to the Family Handbook on Sycamore – Documents for the complete absent work policy). STUCO Interest Meeting: Students wanting to know what Student Council is all about or interestedin attending the High Ropes course at Camp Wartburg need to plan on staying after school for a meeting in Mr. Braddy’s room Monday, 8/28 from 3-3:30pm. Can’t make it? See Mr. Braddy during school Monday for information! Parent Education Night: Our PTL is planning a special Parent Education Night. Here is a tidbit of information about it: Parent Technology Night Thursday, September 21, 2017 5:30-8:00pm Lee Crockett is an International Speaker and will be talking about Global Citizenship. We will also have an adult happy hour and appetizer buffet. I am ready and excited for full week #2! If you have any questions or concerns, let me know through email or text! Happy Saturday! Holy moly I cannot believe the first week of school is over! We have had a whirlwind of a week (or three days really) and have learned lots! Especially me!
