Another fantastic week is behind us! This week flew by and I think the kiddos had a lot of fun!
This week, in Science we experimented with series and parallel circuits. In Lit., we read a nonfiction story about all the work Gary Soto did to earn the privilege to go to the drive-in movies. We got to choose a different character in the story and write an event of the story from their point of view. We were even able to add in crazy and funny fictional details! In religion, we learned about the differences between Law and Gospel. In Social Studies we learned about Latitude and Longitude lines, and Rotation and Revolution. In Math, we learned about decimals, place values, and rounding decimals. In English, we learned about compound subjects and predicates. That’s another AMAZING week in our AMAZING Classroom!!!!! ~Emma and Madalyn In Religion this week, the students practiced writing a prayer based on the PATH model (praise, apology, thanksgiving, and help). We also started defining Law and Gospel and what the differences are between the two. We were able to have our first Second Steps lesson on Thursday that discussed including others when we hang out and play! Next week, they will learn that they should not only be a friend towards everyone but also an ally to people who need it. Wednesday's chapel this week was a Faith Family chapel day! We finally met our Faith Families for the year and had lots of fun! This is a group of students from all grades 1-8 and a teacher. We build relationships through chapel, activities, service, and prayer. This week we had our first faith family activity. Our devotion was about being God’s postage stamp. We each must GO and deliver the Good News of Jesus. We spent time writing what we could say to tell others about Jesus on paper. These papers will be used in a piece of art that will remind us to GO and TELL. We used toilet paper to help get to know each other and then returned to chapel to celebrate Baptismal Remembrance for July, August, and September. In Literature, the students wrote a point of view paragraph taking the view of another character in the story, "Drive In Movies." They came up with some very creative stories while taking on the role as a side character from the story! I encourage you to read them! ART If you stop in, make sure to check out the hallways downstairs in Junior High! We have started to display artwork and other fun projects we have worked on this year so far! REMINDERS: 1. Don't forget to remind your child to bring chapel offering each week! It goes towards Angie and her missionary work in China! 2. Make sure your kid is reading every day! AR is due October 8th and they need 16 points! I have seen a couple of kids take quizzes but it is always good to be reading each and every day! 3. DON'T FORGET ABOUT NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY! HAVE A FANTASTIC THREE DAY WEEKEND! :)))

What a fun filled week we had in 6P! Our first full week has flown by and the kids were awesome. We are now in the FULL SWING of things and the kiddos are doing a great job adjusting! We will definitely perfect it over the coming weeks!
This week, we learned about different lines in art. We experimented in the STEAM Lab with static electricity in Science and reviewed place values in Math. In Geography, we learned about Latitude and Longitude lines. We did Bible Flip-Books and learned about the Path Prayer in Religion. In English, we reviewed subject, predicates, simple subjects, simple predicates, and different types of sentences. We also learned about plot lines in Literature. That’s a week in our amazing classroom!!!!! ~ written by bloggers Emma and Madalyn We now have a full week under our belts and a sense of how classes and transitions go. We are getting better each and every day with these things along with travel to and from classes, organization, and turning in homework. They also are understanding and learning the importance of responsibility and what it means to be a sixth grade student at Zion. These kids absolutely love their classroom jobs and being helpers whenever possible! They have been such a great help for when things start to get crazy! On Thursday, we were able to use the STEAM lab for the first time by completing a Static Electricity Lab! The kids experimented with static electricity and charge as they used balloons, spoons, salt and pepper, paper, and water. They would charge the balloons or spoons by rubbing them on felt, plastic wrap, or...their hair! They learned that some objects were attracted to the charged objects while others repelled. Ask them about it! It was great! (Pics below) On Friday, we welcomed Mrs. Carol Martin into our grade as she taught them the importance of prayer and using Bible verses as a starting point for prayer. They will write a prayer that will be read over the PA on Wednesday mornings! How exciting! Our first units for each subject are as follows: Religion: What is the Bible? Social Studies: Mapping Skills Math: (for both classes) Place Value, Basic Operations, Properties of Addition/Multiplication Literature: Fiction/Nonfiction English: The Sentence and its pieces Science: Electricity and Magnetism Art: Bible viewpoint Absences: Sickness has already struck some students in sixth grade. Say that five times fast! Students will be absent throughout the year for various reasons. As a reminder, in Junior High, the teachers collect assignments throughout the day for the absent student and will have this absent work ready to be picked up IN THE CLASSROOM at the end of the day. It is not feasible for us to run homework to siblings or the office. In general, students have 2 days for each day absent to make up homework up to 3 days. Any assignments requested in advance are due upon return. (Please refer to the Family Handbook on Sycamore – Documents for the complete absent work policy). STUCO Interest Meeting: Students wanting to know what Student Council is all about or interested in attending the High Ropes course at Camp Wartburg need to plan on staying after school for a meeting in Mr. Braddy’s room Monday, 8/27 from 3-3:30pm. Can’t make it? See Mr. Braddy during school Monday for information! Needed! ROOM PARENTS! If you or your significant other would like to be a room parent this year, please email me ASAP so I can forward along information. It would be so helpful to have two or three!!! It is an easy job I promise! Lastly, thanks to all who attended Back to School Night. I am ready and excited for full week #2! If you have any questions or concerns, let me know through email or text! Happy weekend! Those three days went by quick! We did a lot of learning and growing together as a class. I think we started the year off with success!
I am so happy to be with your kids! They have been wonderful and very respectful! We started our year off by focusing on our school theme: Mark 16:15 And he said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation." This year through our theme, we will explore how God calls us to spread the message of salvation to everyone, near and far. Students started in day one devotions grabbing an everyday object out of a bag and as a group creating a witness opportunity around it. Yesterday we started breaking down our theme song into key phrases that show what "going out to every nation" involves, looking for a Bible character as a model of "walking in the light," showing "peace and justice," or "forgiveness." Here is what we did this week! Wednesday: Came in nervous, left with smiles. We went to chapel and heard from Angie Steinbacher and her experiences in Asia. Our chapel offerings this year will support her and all of the kiddos she teaches! Afterwards, we had to take our whole school photo inside and we formed an arrow to remind others to GO out to preach to all of creation! Later on, we played games, got acquainted with Jr. High rules and expectations, and asked lots of questions. We are getting into our routine already! I love it! Thursday we started getting into the swing of how our classes will work this year. To the 6th graders' surprise, they did receive some homework that day! We also had PE with Mrs. Riemenschneider's class and played dodgeball! Friday was even more structured but with plenty of fun things to learn about. The kids started their first art project, we read Wingdings in Literature, and talked about the moon in Science class. It looked they were enjoying themselves, even in SCHOOL! NEW TO SIXTH GRADE: One of our big goals in 6th grade is for students to become more independent in their learning. This news blog will update you on current happenings, but in 6th grade we no longer publish spelling words, memory assignments, or tests in the parent news. These are things your child will be tracking in their assignment book. If an individual student needs more organizational help, I will work one-on-one with that student. I plan to publish this blog weekly on Thursdays. (In reality, it may be Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings some weeks!) SYCAMORE: You should have received a login for Sycamore Education from Mrs. Schmidt. This is your access to school news. This will also be how you access your child's grades. Please click around, and ASK QUESTIONS if you are confused. BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: Mark your calendar: The PTL Back to School Night is Tuesday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. This is an "adult only" information night. Join the 2 sixth grade teachers in the 6Preusser classroom to hear further information about the unique aspects of 6th grade. There are three 20 minute session times with a 5 minute time to get to another child's classroom. Please attend one of the 6th grade sessions. I look forward to seeing you! There are three sessions you can attend: 6:30pm: Session 1 6:50pm: Passing period 7:00pm: Session 2 7:20pm: Passing period 7:30pm: Session 3 SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS: Even when I thought I was super organized this week (definitely know way more what to do than last year) I forgot to send book order forms home on Friday. I will be sure to pass those out on Monday. I will be placing the first order on August 31st at 5pm so be sure to get those in before then! Our class code is: R6TZX Overall, a fantastic three days. I love learning about your kids and I think the kiddos are having fun too! Have a FABULOUS weekend! |
