This week was the week after Thanksgiving Break. :( We were all a bit crabby on Monday, let's admit it, but we still had a great week Throughout the week we have been making snowflakes and paper chains to display all over the classroom! We have lights, a hang-on-the-wall Christmas Tree, and a small Nativity scene, too! Our room looks great! We have been working on our Christmas art all this week. In Lit we started reading a Novel called, “Among the Hidden.” It is REALLY good! It’s full of tons of twists and turns. Each time I finish reading the chapters due, I want to keep reading! In Science we have started a new unit about earthquakes. We finished up section 4 today. We’ve had a lot of advent practices this week. We have said advent songs for memory.
In social studies we had our test and started a Prezi on either Pollution, Invasive Species, and Habitat Loss, our choice. And that’s another AMAZING week in our AMAZING classroom! BY: LUCY & EMMA (a.k.a LUEM) We are back into the swing of things after a week off! We had a very eventful and quick week! Here is what we did. On Monday, we had another Advent practice in the morning. We are really close to being fully ready for our service which is NEXT WEDNESDAY! The students are very excited and are working hard to make it the best it can be! In Religion before Thanksgiving break, we made plans with a partner to meet once a week to have a five minute devotion, prayer, or chat about our faith.. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend a few minutes a week with God and with a friend! WHAT IF... ...the government could force you to sell land? ...we had laws on what you could grow on your farm? or that said NO PETS ALLOWED? ...your family was limited to one or two children? Would you exist? I hope talks about our Literature novel have popped up in your family conversations. Students began the novel, Among the Hidden by Margaret Petersen Haddix, and I have to put a STOP sign in the novels to get them to put it down. Through the novel we discuss literary elements like characterization and conflict, but also propaganda, morals, and faith. It also coordinates with Mrs. Riemenschneider's next. S.S unit on Urban Sprawl in which students are taking on the roles of local citizen activist groups to debate how best to plan a city for population growth. Ask your child about it! P.S. Need a gift idea? This is the first of a series of seven. Scholastic has the The Shadow Children series for $28. I'll place our last Scholastic Order before Christmas on December 10th. Email me any gift order and I'll send them to the office for you to keep the secret! 5/6 ADVENT WORSHIP: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5 The songs are learned, the dramas are getting polished, and practices are winding down; preparations are nearly complete for our Advent Services on Wednesday. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving break! I will be staying in St. Louis, hanging with family, and eating all the FOOD! I am so thankful for my second year of teaching at Zion and especially thankful to have your kids as my students! I am also thankful to have wonderful parents to work with and ensure growth for the kids! A big thank you goes to you! Make sure you tell your child that I am thankful for them as well. :) We have had a great year so far and I look forward to the rest of the year too!
This past week, we had a lot of random things occur to change up our schedule (Advent practice, Health screenings, Snow day!). I think the students liked the mystery of what we would do each day. They are working hard to make our Advent service a great one! We also had our Thanksgiving food drive on Wednesday and donated a lot of items! I noticed many students in our class coming in with paper towels, cleaning supplies, and toothbrushes! I am so happy with the turnout! We are finally into our Religion books! Our focus shifts from What is in the Bible and the Reformation to the life of Christ and we started with Jesus' birth. We will be using the film The Visual Bible: Matthew along with our text to dig deep into who was Jesus as well as his teachings, miracles, and passion. Check out the parent letter on my Religion tab at the top of my blog! We also started a new science chapter on Tuesday. We are discussing Earthquakes! We will be doing a lab the week after Thanksgiving to learn how to locate an Earthquake after it occurs! Midquarter was this past Friday so make sure to remind students to continue reading for AR and try to set goals with them for school in general! They continually work hard each day but sometimes it can get tiring! I hope they keep it up and work even harder this second half of the quarter! Make sure to go through their Friday papers, check grades on Sycamore, and ask about AR so that we can verify they are on track. I apologize for the lack of photos! I only have one picture I took as I was walking in chapel so it isn't the best! Sorry!! Advent Reminder Have you marked your calendar? Just a reminder that Wednesday, December 5, at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Grades 5 and 6 will lead the first Advent worship services at Zion Church. We have begun preparations for leading worship including practicing readings, auditioning for drama parts, and learning songs. Scholastic Book Orders I will be ordering on November 28th, the Wednesday after break. Double check with your child if they would like to order any books. This would also be an excellent gift idea for your kids or others! I can be sure to hide any books that will be given as gifts and notify you when they come in! I will order once more in mid-December for this semester. Remember our class code is: R6TZX. You're Invited to Advent Family Fun Night! We had a great time celebrating the beginning of Advent together last year and look forward to doing it again! When: Saturday, Dec. 1st from 4pm-5pm Where: Zion Lutheran Church Basement What: There will be crafts, games, activities, and treats all centered around the nativity to kick off the Advent season! Bring your family and create a cool wooden nativity together. This is a free, open-house style event. Come for a few minutes or the whole hour! We hope to see you there! Questions: Please contact Bethany Andrews, Children's Ministry Director at [email protected] or 636-441-7425. We had such a busy week this week that if flew right past us. Here is what we did:
We had our first big advent practice Monday morning where the kids started to sing the advent songs and become familiar with them. We also picked our actors and actresses for our skit! Thanks to Alex F, Lily, Daija, and James for auditioning! Thursday was World Cup Stacking Day which is held every year and our sixth graders were eager to participate! I took lots of photos so be sure to check them out below! They had cup stacking relay races, giant cup stacking, tiny cup stacking, battle cup stacking, and a cup "ball" pit. It was awesome! Hopefully we helped contribute to breaking the world record of number of people to cup stack in one day! Lastly, on Friday we had a Veteran's Day service in the morning put on by Mrs. Murray. We learned that we need to actively say "Thank you" to all Veterans we see all the time, but especially on Veteran's Day (which is Sunday!). The boy scouts helped lead the chapel service as well and did a spectacular job. For Art on Friday we have started our Christmas Art for the Christmas Art display that Junior High puts on. The students will be displaying a message centered on Christ with images to support the message. The students will be painting with acrylics to make their piece stand out even more. As a way to thank those who serve our country we made Christmas cards for the U.S.O. We also had the opportunity to celebrate baptismal birthdays for October, November, and December.
We also had our first Advent practice on Thursday afternoon. The fifth and sixth grade teachers introduced the skits we will be doing (by acting them out ourselves) and talking about all of the different jobs the kids can sign up for. Make sure to encourage your child to participate in our advent activities! Thursday was a fun day as we were able to act out scenes from the short story "Dragon, Dragon" in Literature! We focused on characterization as the students had to display different character traits while acting. See the photos below! This week was definitely a lot of fun! NO SCHOOL TUESDAY- Remember that we are off school 11/6 for Election day. Memory will be due on Monday/Friday next week. World Sport Stacking Day and Sport Stacking Equipment for sale: Our First through Sixth grade students have been working on their Sport Stacking skills during their PE classes. Sport Stacking (also known as Speed Stacking or Cup Stacking) is a sport in which specially designed cups are stacked in specific patterns as quickly as possible. It has been called a “track meet for your hands” and not only improves eye-hand coordination, but also academic learning. “Students that sport stack on a regular basis have shown increases in test scores and levels of concentration. When students sport stack they are crossing the "midline" of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. These new connections help to spur brain growth which in turn promotes greater academic achievement.” Not only that---SPORT STACKING is FUN! To find out more about Sport Stacking please go to www.speedstacks.com. Mrs. Steinbacher has a selection of Standard Cups and StackMats available for purchase. The Standard Cups may be purchased for $20.00. The StackMats are $25.00. You may purchase a set of Standard Cups and a StackMat for the discounted price of $40.00. There is no tax or shipping charges on your items. You may pay by check made out to “Zion Lutheran School”, or you may pay by cash.
