Even with a three day week, we packed it full of fun learning opportunities. Here is what we did!
We received the opportunity to teach preschoolers about circuits! The 6th graders were so helpful and kind to them as they tried their best to explain electricity. After teaching all that we know, I asked our class what they have learned. They replied with thoughts like, "It is SO hard to explain things to a preschooler!" and "I had to say the same thing over and over again!" Even though they thought it was tough, they did an excellent job demonstrating how to build a circuit and explaining electricity. I think they had fun! (pics below!) I am so glad I was able to meet with all parents and all students this week as well! Thanks for making it to the conferences on Thursday! Here are our current units: Religion: Reformation English: Verbs Science: Matter Literature: Character Sketch Red Ribbon Week: Starting next week! On Wednesday, December 6 at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m, grades 5 and 6 will lead the first Advent worship services at Zion Church. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students as they help our congregation prepare for the Lord's coming. Attendance is expected at both services, so please mark your calendars now and keep the date open. Let me know of any conflicts right away as parts will be assigned soon. We are eager to begin preparations for leading worship as December will be here before we know it. During the coming weeks, all students will learn songs selected to reinforce their message. Students will also have opportunities to try various roles in the service, such as special drama, music, or “behind the scenes” parts. Part of our Memory Work assignments will shift focus to learning songs and lines. Students will also have an opportunity to share their special musical talents. Any student who has had two years of music lessons or is in the Concert Band may offer to play for the services. Selections must be: 1) sacred music related to the Advent or Christmas seasons of the church year 2) practiced and ready to audition the week of November 13 Books for Hurricane I have encouraged the students to bring books that they would like to donate to hurricane victims. You should have received a small piece of paper with the information on it a couple of weeks ago. If you have books that you would like to donate, I am more than happy to send them off! Religion: Our study of what is in the Bible continued today with a look at the epistles. Knowing audience and author's purpose helped see the important messages the apostles had for early Christians and us today. We wrap up this unit next week. 2nd Step: Students discovered 3 styles of communication: passive, assertive, and aggressive and what each look like in words, tone, body language, and facial expressions. Literature: Completed our unit on Fiction/Nonfiction with a look at author's perspective, tone, inferences and symbolism. We read a character sketch of Mark Twain written by his 13-year-old daughter, Susy. This will lead into writing our own character sketches as we begin viewing The Prince and the Pauper. We started a new English unit on nouns. This unit is quick and will wrap up on Thursday. Science: We are about finished with our first Science book on Electricity and Magnetism. The students are learning how electricity and magnetism work together to help us in the world today. Next quarter, we will start a new book on Matter.
