This week, we got into our daily routines for the year. We had our intros to spelling and art. In Art, we had a line art assignment where we outlined our different school materials and designed cool, colored lines inside of them. We haven’t done any spelling this year, but we now know how to do it. In English, we reviewed a preposition song that we learned last year and are now taking quizzes on it. In Literature, we are learning from Jane Yolen from the book. We read a story called Greyling about a half-seal half-boy. We also read a speech called My Heart Is In The Highlands. In Social Studies, we are getting introduced to Geography and maps. For Science, we got introduced to science labs, we’ve done a few experiments. We had science quizzes on Wednesday and Friday. In Math, we have had some assignments and homework to go along with a diagnostic from last week. In religion we tried a PATH prayer and are working on mini bible books. In Memory, we recited the Old Testament books and New Testament books. We filled out a digital safety form and are doing a fun online safety game called Digital Compass. In Gym, we practiced volleyball. On Friday for art, we made some bible art with a foreground, middle ground, and background. ~Andrew and Nick

Those three days went by quickly! We did a lot of learning and growing together as a class. I think we started the year off with success! I am so happy to be with your kids. They have been wonderful and very respectful. We started our year off by focusing on our school theme:
Isaiah 49:16 - See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. New to 6th Grade: 6th grade is all about learning independence. My blog will update you on important school info and the fun things we did but we no longer publish spelling words, test dates, or other daily assignments in the parent news. These are things your child will be tracking in their assignment book. I plan to publish this blog sometime on the weekends and an email will be sent when a new blog post is complete. Other Notes:
STUCO There is a STUCO (student council) and HIGH ROPES interest meeting this upcoming Tuesday, August 23 from 3:00-3:30 in Mr. Weinhold’s room. This is for all kids who want to either participate in STUCO and/or attend our Saturday field trip to Camp Wartburg to complete the high ropes course! Please make sure your child stops by if they are interested in either option. Scholastic Book Orders: Kids should have brought home Scholastic book forms on Friday. I will be placing the first order on September 17th so be sure to get those in if you want to order books! Our class code is: R6TZX Assignment Sheet - click me! (Always on sidebar of my blog as a button FYI) - make sure to find the right tab at the bottom of this sheet for the current week Offering in Chapel This year Zion’s offerings will be used to partner with Bethlehem Lutheran Church in their More Greater Things Ministry. This is a ministry that focuses on reaching children with the Gospel by building relationships and providing needs. The ministry provides free summer camp, free after school care club, block parties for families where Jesus is taken to the streets, children’s needs are provided for such as utility bills are paid for families, winter coats are given, meals are provided, and transportation is provided. Our offering for each quarter will support 4 different ministry areas.
Sunday School Starting Sunday, August 21, join Mr. Demien on Sundays from 9:30-10:15 am for food, games and Bible trivia! We will meet in Mrs. Crenshaw's room - 6th, 7th and 8th graders are all welcome! Welcome sixth grade families! Our school theme is based on a verse from the prophet Isaiah. To show just how valuable God's people are to Him, Isaiah declares:
Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me. ~Isaiah 49:16 What a great message as we begin a new school year. When we feel forgotten or unimportant, or when we've messed up big time, we can know that we are special to God - so valuable that we were engraved on His hands through the marks of the nails used when Jesus died for our sins on the cross. We are forgiven, redeemed, and chosen to follow him. I am beyond excited to be your child's teacher this year! I know that we will have lots of fun while learning and growing together with God! I have been very busy this summer preparing for the upcoming school year and setting up my classroom. I look forward to meeting all of you August 15th from 2:00pm - 7:00pm for our Open House! My classroom is located in the basement of the junior high building off to the right! Stop by to say hello, check out the classroom, drop off school supplies**, and chat. Make sure you meet Mrs. Riemenschneider too! (Link to her blog is on the lower right sidebar). Yearbook photos will also be taken that day in the commons so make sure your kiddo has a polo on! I am very pumped for the school year! Enjoy those last few summer days! (If you would like to get a head start on things, you can fill out the forms attached at the bottom of this post! They will be available until the end of Open House!) Mrs. Donner **School supplies: Please stick closely to the school supply list. Label all items with student names. It's OK to hold off on buying tissues until winter. I have plenty to start the year. I'll let you know when we are running low. Please email me any questions you have about the supply list.
