Week 7 is complete! Here is what we did!
This week in science, we started to learn about electricity and magnetism We also got to see the rocket launch and vote about the rockets. In Literature, we read a story by Mark Twain’s Daughter. In religion we learned about the Gospel. In math, we continued to learn more about algebraic expressions. In english, we worked more on our persuasive essay. In Geography, we learned about different maps. That’s a week in our amazing classroom! By Madalyn and Lily All week our sixth graders have been writing and editing their opinion essays in English. Their final, printed essay was due Thursday and we celebrated our writing! I am excited to show you their work during Parent/Teacher conferences! We have continued talking about the different parts of the Old Testament in the Bible, specifically focusing on the prophets. In Literature, we have been discussing inferences, symbolism, and fact/opinion. We will soon be watching "The Prince and the Pauper"! A movie in black and white! How fun! Lastly, in Science, we finished up our Magnetism chapter and started our last electricity/magnetism unit: Electromagnetism. On Wednesday, we had the presentation through the Megan Meier Foundation where the kids learned the importance of building each other up instead of tearing each other down. We talked about bullying and its effects, with special attention to being online. We talked more about these topics on Thursday during 2nd Step where we split the boys and girls to have more meaningful conversations. The kids had a lot of questions and deep emotions about this and it seemed like it was eye-opening for most of them. I hope they understand the effects words can have on people and pray every day that others understand too. Friday was the winner of the week that was filled with lots of fun activities. We received the opportunity to watch the 8th graders do their rocket launch in the morning! We actually got to vote for "Most Scientific" and "Best Dressed" rockets the day before. The kids loved it! Some rockets got up to great heights while others slowly made their way down to the ground. See pics below! In the afternoon on Friday, we held our Walkathon! Our prayers were heard as the weather was absolutely perfect! I noticed a lot of sixth graders running while the others walked and still got to five or six miles! Our class total mileage was about 115 miles!! The kids really enjoyed this event and were excited to raise money for two great causes! The pledges are due by October 8th so your kids can still try to raise money up until then! Pics below! Tip of the Week: Double check that your child is emptying out his or her Friday Folder each Friday. I've noticed that some of these folders are PACKED with papers from previous weeks. Go through these papers with your child and notice all of the hard work they have put into this first quarter so far! REMINDERS: - We have a half day of school on Wednesday, the 3rd! For some reason, the weather had decided to spike back up to the 90/100's and it has been toasty! Luckily, it has come back down and I was actually freezing cold at the Cardinals game last night! I'm not sure about you all, but time is flying by and these weeks go by in a blink.
This week in science, we learned more about magnets. In literature, we read 3 stories and learned about different tones. In Social Studies, we learned about different maps. In religion, we learned about the Pentateuch, Historic, Poetic and Wisdom books of the bible. In math, we learned how to evaluate algebraic expressions. In english, we continued to work on our persuasive essay. Well, that’s another week in our GREAT classroom!!!!!! By Madalyn Thursday, we had a new Second Steps lesson about considering others' perspectives. In order to empathize with others, we have to understand and consider all possibilities that the other person might be experiencing. Knowing how to do this might decrease conflict and build stronger relationships. Religion: The structure of the Bible and God's covenant promises English: WRITING Opinion Essay Literature: Fiction and Nonfiction with an emphasis on fact/opinion and symbolism Science: Moving on to Electromagnetism! I know in Social Studies that the kids put on a weather skit. Pictures are added on Mrs. Riemenschneider's blog so be sure to check them out! So fun! BOBCAT SHUFFLE: The Bobcat Shuffle is October 27th! This event is a great way to help out the school and have fun with Zion school members! Consider signing up to run or walk a 5K filled with lots of music and food! Also, if our class has the most people sign up, our classroom alone gets a dress down day! How fun! WALKATHON: The walkathon is next week on Friday!! I hope the kids have found many people to pledge money to the cause. Potential people who could pledge include family members, friends, Zion families without a kid at Zion anymore, or your kid can pledge money themselves! The afternoon is going to be filled with fun activities! The kids are allowed to wear dress down clothes which includes athletic bottoms (appropriate length) and a Bobcat Spirit shirt. Bring sunscreen and a hat to wear because we will be outside for awhile. We will have lunch in the classroom. Make sure their lunches have no peanut products since there won't be a peanut free table. Hot lunch will still be served as well! Scholastic Book Orders: I will be placing an order next Friday by 5pm so be sure to get your orders in before then either online or send to school and I can send in the mail! Class code is R6TZX. AR Points AR is due October 8th and each student needs 16 points. If you are curious how many points your kid has, make sure to visit the AR HomeConnect website located in my Websites tab at the top. I met with students who have not reached the 16 point goal yet and discussed their plan on getting there. REMEMBER: AR counts as 1/3 of the Literature grade! If students receive 20, 50, or even 100 points, they can receive a No Homework Coupon too! Field Trip I had a lot of parents volunteer to drive on our field trip on October 12th! It is going to be great! Thank you for your willingness to help our class. More information will come out at the date comes closer. Technology Night Tuesday Just a hint - the appetizers last year were hearty enough to be dinner!! Hope you can make it for this important information night and enjoy a little fellowship with other parents! 6-7p.m. Appetizers and Fellowship 7-8:30 Presentation: Megan Meier Presentation Location: Lower level Church Fellowship Hall Another week has flown by! This week was short and sweet but definitely full of challenges for the kids. We had more tests so I know they studied lots! We have used Kahoot a lot this week and last to review the concepts we needed to know for the tests. The kids absolutely love doing Kahoots and they are great quick checks for me to see if they know their stuff!
This week was the beginning of our new unit in English. For the next couple of weeks, the kids will be working on writing. They are going to write an opinion essay about something they really like or enjoy (or do not like/enjoy). I have been introducing them to the idea of this type of essay and meeting with each student individually to talk about their idea for their essay. Some ideas are really creative! I can't wait to read the end result. Thursday, we continued Second Steps and talked about what it meant to be an ally to someone. I really think these lessons are helping with student to student cooperation as well as active listening skills and respect for the teacher. Also on Thursday, we had an Electrician from Cuivre River come by and discuss energy conservation! They learned about cheaper products like LED light bulbs and about how companies like Cuivre River produce electricity for our homes! Joe was a great teacher to the students and kept them entertained the whole time with his funny stories! Here are our next units in each subject: Religion: The structure of the Bible and God's covenant promises English: WRITING Opinion Essay Literature: Fiction and Nonfiction with an emphasis on fact/opinion and symbolism Science: Magnetism MID QUARTER GRADES Just a friendly reminder that Monday of next week is Mid-Quarter. I can't believe it has already been half of a quarter! With this in mind, take a minute to check your child's grades. They should be all up to date by Monday at the end of the day. If you question a grade, please make sure to ask your child first before contacting me. There is a 99.9% chance they already know why a grade is the way it is. Also, keep in mind that if a student has more than 2 D's, they are ineligible to play any sports. WALKATHON Double check to make sure your child is finding pledges for the walkathon! The pledge sheet isn't actually due until after the Walkathon so they can continue to find pledges until the event! All proceeds go towards Friends of Kids with Cancer, a great cause! Field Trip: Drivers needed Oct. 12 On Friday, Oct. 12 we head to Weldon Spring Interpretive Center to learn about energy, environmental clean up, and stewardship of our natural habitats. After a picnic lunch we head to St. Charles Lanes to bowl. We are in need of parent drivers to join us for the day, from 8:30 - 2:45. Please email me if you are interested in chaperoning. You will need a current driver background check. Also let me know how many students you could drive. Further information will come out as the date approaches. Parent Technology Night (repeat): Tuesday, September 25th (6pm - 8:30pm) join us for Parent Technology Night in the church basement. Tina Meier, Founder and Executive Director of the Megan Meier Foundation, shares her daughter’s story and shows first-hand the devastating effects of bullying, cyberbullying and suicide. Has it really been almost a full month of school?? I cannot believe it! Lots happened in this very short and quick week!
This week, in Math, we learned about adding and multiplying decimals. In Lit, we read a fictional story about monkeys called “Why Monkeys Live in Trees”. We also read a nonfiction story called, “The Case of the Monkeys Who Fell from the Trees.” In Religion, we learned about creation, Adam and Eve, and the fall. In Science, we continued to learn all about electricity. We had a quiz on Thursday, too! In English, we continued to review on subjects, predicates, and different types of sentences. During Geography, we practiced finding the Latitude and Longitude. We also learned about different types of map projections, and their advantages and disadvantages. Well, that’s a third AMAZING week in our AMAZING classroom with our AMAZING teachers, Miss Preusser and Mrs. Riemenschneider!!!!! ~ Emma and Madalyn Thursday, we continued Second Steps and talked about what it meant to be an friend to someone. I really think these lessons are helping with student to student cooperation as well as active listening skills and respect for the teacher. All week long, we have been reviewing and practicing our English concepts to prepare for the test we had today, Friday. I'm confident they did well and excited to see the results! It was a quick week for sure and I'm sure next week will be the same! (NO SCHOOL FRIDAY!!) :) Junior High Walkathon Friday morning, we had our Walkathon kickoff. Ask the kids what they will be doing for this awesome event! If they can't remember, here is the low down. Our Walkathon is going to be September 28th. The kids have to find people who will pledge a certain amount of money for every mile that child runs/walks. We are raising money for two organizations this year - 50% will go to Angie Steinbacher and her work and and 50% will go to Christian Friends of New America. On the day of the Walkathon, we will be outside from about 12:30 to 2:30 walking and running laps! There will be a water/popsicle station, snack shack, and lots of other free and fun goodies the kids will get! It will be an awesome day! PRAY FOR GREAT WEATHER! If you have any questions about this event, let me know! More info will be sent out closer to the event! For now, help the kids find people who will pledge money to the cause! Thanks! Book It I gave the kids a task to think about a reading goal outside of AR for the Book It program I am hosting in my class. Students can set numbers of minutes, pages, or even books as their goal to earn one free personal pan pizza coupon from Pizza Hut each month. Help them decide on this goal this weekend so that we can start soon! PARENT TECHNOLOGY NIGHT: Tina Meier Don't forget parent technology night is this next September 25th! Tina Meier is the presenter that night. Tina Meier, Founder and Executive Director of the Megan Meier Foundation, shares her daughter's story and shows first-hand the devastating effects of bullying, cyberbullying, and suicide. Presentation topics include bullying and cyberbullying, social media and online responsibility, sexting, digital footprints, empathy, bystander vs. up stander behaviors, and suicide awareness. It would be great for all junior high parents to attend because she will present to the students the following day. Here is the info for both days: September 25th Parent Only Event - 6pm - 8:30pm. Appetizers and Fellowship is from 6pm - 7pm and the presentation will be from 7pm - 8:30pm. September 26th Junior High Presentation - 1:30pm - 3pm. |
