Check out photos of the Breakout Exploration Math - T- Ratios/Fractions/Decimals/Percents G -Coordinate Plane Art - Impressionism This week during our Faith Family Event we put together 160 care packages for Friends with Kids with Cancer. Thank you to Thrivent Financial for helping to pay for the items in the care packages. As a Faith Family, we studied Matthew 5:13-16 and were reminded to salt and light to the world. We pray these care packages will help in a small way ease the suffering of the kids who receive them and let them know that someone cares for them. It is good to work together and share God’s love. It was also good to celebrate baptismal birthdays in the months of March and April. On Friday, choir and band received the opportunity to go to LHS’s Fine Arts Festival. I’m excited to see how they scored! Because of the different times they all were leaving, we had an interesting day!! In Science, we did a Cell breakout where the students had to think outside the box and answer questions to find the codes and unlock the game. It was so fun! (See pics below) I’m sure the students are excited for Spring Break and I encourage everyone to attend worship this week! Easter is one week! Scholastic Book Orders: Due Monday, March 26th by 7pm! Order up!

We did it! We got through all of our achievement testing without any problems! I think the students liked doing the tests online versus on paper. It was easy to follow and easy to proctor for me as well! I am excited to see how they scored!
In addition to a weird week due to testing, we did lots of fun things! In Literature this week, we learned about disabilities. On Tuesday, we learned about auditory disabilities. We practiced sign language as well as lipreading! We also heard a man talk jibberish as it reflects how a student who has problems hearing might hear. On Wednesday, we learned about blindness and had to lead a partner down the hall who was blindfolded! After washing hand, they had to come back to the classroom, butter a cracker, and eat it! It was so fun! On Thursday, my mom, Laurie Preusser, came to class to talk about her job as a teacher of the deaf. She works at the Moog Center and works with toddlers who have hearing aids or cochlear implants and teaches them to talk. The kids were amazed at her job! Lastly, on Friday, we talked about cognitive and physical disabilities and did a lot of activities. Report cards came home on Friday. Be sure to look them over with your child and set goals for fourth quarter! We are on the final stretch, they can do it! English class started Research Reports and Science has begun a study of cells. In Religion, we are beginning our study of the Passion of our Lord. Lots of learning yet in 6th grade!! Best Choice After Easter, we welcome an educator from Best Choice to lead our Religion classes. Through this program, students will be involved in active discussions about setting goals, healthy relationships, puberty, and making God-pleasing decisions. The Best Choice program is designed to encourage children to make lifelong commitments to building relationships, making informed choices, choosing abstinence before marriage, and avoiding risky behaviors. Mrs. Riemenschneider and I will participate in the classes and continue follow up discussions. A permission slip came home Friday to sign and return for your child to participate. To help you prepare for discussions with your child at home, here are the topics Best Choice has used in the past. I will update you daily with our discussions. Classes start Monday, April 9 (first day back from Easter break). I pray that you use these as opportunities to open the dialogue with your child and share your values with them. Research shows parents are still the number one influence on their teens! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Monday: Goals, Risky Behaviors, and Decision Making Tuesday: Respect, Friendships, and Healthy vs. Unhealthy Relationships, Refusal Skills Thursday: Male/Female Puberty Friday: Media Influence, Emotional Consequences, Boundaries, and Avoidance Techniques This week was a busy one since it is the end of Quarter 3! One more quarter to go! We had a plethora of tests that the kids did their best on! We also wrote letters to our grandparents in English class, focusing on no spelling/punctuation/capitalization errors at all! We ended the week with Grandparent's Day/Special Friend's Day. I was delighted to meet a lot of grandmas and grandpas and show off the STEAM Lab!
NEW STUDENT We welcome Jonah D. to 6th grade starting on Monday. He will be in Mrs. Riemenschneider's homeroom but will be incorporated with all of sixth grade! Jonah's mom is a former Zion student and his family has just moved here from the Denver area. As you have opportunity, please welcome them and help them learn all of the Zion routines and culture. Report Cards They will come home on Friday. Be aware that teachers are processing grades and Sycamore will not be up to date before Tuesday or later. If your child was sick the last two weeks, double check with them that they submitted all absent work! Achievement Testing Achievement Testing starts next week, March 12-16! Zion is shifting to the Iowa Basic Skills tests and will be testing through their online system. Mrs. Helmkamp will join us for the "Getting Started" tutorial so we are all comfortable with the new format. Encourage your child to get good rest and eat breakfast each day! Reminders: Auction is next Friday, the 16th. Spirit Day is also next Friday. Scholastic Book Orders: Due by March 26th! This week was full of learning! We watched The Miracle Worker in Literature and learned all about Helen Keller and the amazing way she was taught to use language. We also have been learning about volcanoes and this week we had a lab on viscosity. Viscosity is how thick a liquid is and we experimented with honey, dish soap, syrup, hand sanitizer, and water. It was a sticky two days! In English, we are doing a quick unit on capitalization and punctuation before we start our research paper! We are wrapping up a study of JESUS as TRUE GOD and TRUE MAN digging deeper into his miracles and parables.

BOOK FAIR: Our class may bring in money to shop at the Scholastic Book Fair on Wednesday. Students will also have an opportunity to shop with a grandparent on Friday. Another option for families this year is to shop online, with a greater selection, and have the books shipped to Zion free of charge. Proceeds benefit our library. SAVE THE DATE: Friday, May 11 will be our Lutheran Heritage Field trip. This is an extended day, arriving at 6:40 a.m. and returning at 5:30 p.m. that evening. Please mark your calendars accordingly. We will be studying immigration and the history of Lutherans in our area. Our day will include a trip to the Altenburg Museum and Saxon Lutheran Memorial in Frohna, MO. This is a colonial homestead where students will learn about the first Lutheran settlers and have an opportunity for trying chores such as gardening, laundry, and grinding corn. Thanks to a generous sponsorship from the PTL, we are able to take a charter bus for the trip and have a few extra seats for more parents to join us. Let me know if you are interested in chaperoning that day! Further details will come home as the date approaches Reminder: AR due Monday, 3/5 by 3:00pm. |
