What’s up Six Grade,
This week was short, and it was fun. This week we watched parts of movie about Martin Luther. This week also we took our English Test. In art we are doing cool partial view art due on November 5th. Last week in Social Studies we were working with Thinglink and it didn’t work, but finally worked this week and this is due on Tuesday. In science this week we started to talk about Cells. Cells are very cool. Well that's all for this week Sixth Grade. Have a great Fall Break/long weekend. ~Jonah World Sport Stacking: Our First through Sixth grade students will be working on their Sport Stacking skills during their PE classes for the next few weeks. Sport Stacking (also known as Speed Stacking or Cup Stacking) is a sport in which specially designed cups are stacked in specific patterns as quickly as possible. It has been called a “track meet for your hands” and not only improves eye-hand coordination, but also academic learning. When students sport stack they are crossing the midline of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. Not only that---SPORT STACKING is FUN and competitive! Our Sport Stacking unit will culminate the week of November 15, 2021 as we add Zion’s number of Sport Stackers to that of people stacking all over the world. This year we will attempt to break the 2019 World Record of 624,390 students participating in the event. If you are interested in purchasing equipment for your child please use Zion’s direct link: speedstacks.com/go-direct/37067-10346742. Mrs. Steinbacher recommends purchasing a set of cups and the timing mat with the timer as seeing your time improve with practice is very motivational. Our sale runs from Nov. 1 through Dec. 12, 2021. Your purchase also helps raise funds for additional PE equipment for Zion. Please contact Mrs. Steinbacher at [email protected] with any questions. Happy Reformation! On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 theses on the local church "bulletin board" calling people to debate the truth of the Bible and how the church had strayed from that truth. Our class is learning about Luther's life as well as the amazing discovery he made: WE ARE SAVED BY GOD'S GRACE - not by good works or money or penance. This led to a reform of the church and the creation of Protestant churches around the world. We are reading a biography of Luther written as if Luther visited sixth graders at a Lutheran school and ate lunch with them for the week, modeled after the Table Talks Luther actually had with students for much of his life. We are also using clips from the Luther Movie made in 2013. Though there are some fictional details added, the heart of the movie shows Luther's struggle to understand God and share with the world about God's love. (Note if you watch- the movie is PG-13 for some violence and language. Sections for class have been selected as appropriate for students and our study.) Student will use modern "social media" to spread Scripture that refutes the false teaching of Luther's day through Flipgrid videos. We will wrap up our Reformation after Fall Break as we examine Luther's motto: Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone.

Be on the lookout in the next week or so for updates on this! Advent Service Students will be leading Advent services again this year! We are very excited to have this opportunity again since we were unable to do it last year. With that said, we are looking for students who are willing to do an instrumental solo for our service. I am asking now for volunteers so that they have time to prepare with their teachers. The guidelines are that they must be taking private lessons currently and they can’t be a beginner. Also, the song needs to be an advent/Christmas song! Reminders:
Serving Afghan Refugees: Thousands of Afghan refugees are presently being screened for clearance on US military bases in the USA and beyond. Approximately 1,400 are expected to arrive in St. Louis and indeed, some already have. Mrs. Riemenschneider's 6th grade class is partnering with Christian Friends of New Americans in St. Louis to pack Welcome Kits and gather items for some of these families. If any Zion families would like to help us, please consider donating the following:
