HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving break! I will be staying in St. Louis, hanging with family, and eating all the FOOD! I am so thankful for my third year of teaching at Zion and especially thankful to have your kids as my students! I am also thankful to have wonderful parents to work with and ensure growth for the kids! A big thank you goes to you! Make sure you tell your child that I am thankful for them as well. :) We have had a great year so far and I look forward to the rest of the year too! Midquarter: Monday marked the midpoint of 2nd quarter. It is a good time to talk with your child about the Friday papers that came home, check grades on Sycamore, and help them set goals for the 2nd half. A great goal? READ over the break! Get those AR points before the last week of December!!! And your kids are not too old to read with you. You can model fluency and have great conversations over books. Traveling? Listen to audio books in the car. ADVENT IS HERE ! 5/6 ADVENT WORSHIP: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4 The songs are learned, the dramas are getting polished, and practices are winding down; preparations are nearly complete for our Advent Services on Wednesday. It is time now for families to join in the preparation! The Advent season prepares us for the coming of Christ. Please plan to join us for one of the services to hear the message of how God works in our hearts to prepare us for his coming. Details about our worship services are below. Blessings to your families this Advent season! Thank you, 5th and 6th grade teachers Times: 10:00 A.M. (chapel with Zion students) and 7:00 P.M. Arrival for the evening services: Students are to meet in the JH building (6th grade in our homerooms, 5th grade - upstairs) between 6:30-6:45 P.M. (Pre-service musicians should check in with their teacher by 6:30 and then proceed to the church) Dress: Students should dress nicely for both the morning service and the evening service. Morning: standardized school dress (or costume) Evening: standardized school dress or “Sunday best” - avoid jeans and clothing with writing (unless costume) After the evening service: Parents may pick up students from the Welcome Center in church. ** Reminder: As students are leading worship, please refrain from flash photography during the service. I do not have an update from my bloggers this week because we visited Preschool today during Homeroom! We met with our buddy class, Mrs. Lohman's preschool, and painted hand turkeys. We also "played pin the feather on the turkey". The 6th graders were great role models to the little ones and had lots of fun too!
Thanks to the numerous donations we received for our Thanksgiving food drive! STUCO students led chapel and gave the message that we need to be thankful for all that we have, all the time! They did a wonderful job. In Religion this week, we made plans with a partner to meet once a week to have a five minute devotion, prayer, or chat about our faith. They are also working on writing their own devotion to share with the class too. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend a few minutes a week with God and with a friend! WHAT IF... ...the government could force you to sell land? ...we had laws on what you could grow on your farm? or that said NO PETS ALLOWED? ...your family was limited to one or two children? Would you exist? I hope talks about our Literature novel have popped up in your family conversations. Students began the novel, Among the Hidden by Margaret Petersen Haddix, and I have to put a STOP sign in the novels to get them to put it down. Through the novel we discuss literary elements like characterization and conflict, but also propaganda, morals, and faith. It also coordinates with Mrs. Riemenschneider's next. S.S unit on Urban Sprawl in which students are taking on the roles of local citizen activist groups to debate how best to plan a city for population growth. Ask your child about it! P.S. Need a gift idea? This is the first of a series of seven. Scholastic has the The Shadow Children series for $28. I'll place our last Scholastic Order before Christmas. Email me any gift order and I'll send them to the office for you to keep the secret! Advent Reminder Have you marked your calendar? Just a reminder that Wednesday, December 4, at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Grades 5 and 6 will lead the first Advent worship services at Zion Church. We have begun preparations for leading worship including practicing readings, auditioning for drama parts, and learning songs. Scholastic Book Orders I will be ordering on December 9th, the last order of 2019! Double check with your child if they would like to order any books. This would also be an excellent gift idea for your kids or others! I can be sure to hide any books that will be given as gifts and notify you when they come in! Remember our class code is: R6TZX. On Monday we had Choir and P.E. and on Tuesday we had a snow day! On Wednesday we had Chapel, Choir, and P.E. On Thursday we had Advent practice, Band, and Music. On Friday we painted our Christmas art project and we had a Social Studies debate on whether the Great Lakes has improved or if it hasn’t improved. ~ Chase and Olivia
Thursday was World Cup Stacking Day which is held every year and our sixth graders were eager to participate! I took lots of photos so be sure to check them out below! They had cup stacking relay races, giant cup stacking, tiny cup stacking, battle cup stacking, and a cup "ball" pit. It was awesome! Hopefully we helped contribute to breaking the world record of number of people to cup stack in one day! For Art on Friday we continued our Christmas Art for the Christmas Art display that Junior High puts on. The students will be displaying a message centered on Christ with images to support the message. The students started painting with acrylics to make their piece stand out even more. Mark your calendar to stop by the JH Christmas Art display in the main school building Dec. 10th (after 9:00 a.m.) and 11th. Our Current Units: Religion: We have begun our study of the New Testament! Student's got into our textbooks with a look at the Kairos of God - his just right time for sending us a Savior, a perfect tie into the coming Advent season. Check out the Religion tab above for more details. English: Finishing verbs and will finish our opinion essays next! Science: Cell Processes and Energy - first up, photosynthesis! Literature: Finished short stories and moving to a novel next. THANKSGIVING DRIVE For the Seminary is Wednesday, Nov. 20. World Sport Stacking Day and Sport Stacking Equipment for sale: Our First through Sixth grade students have been working on their Sport Stacking skills during their PE classes. Sport Stacking (also known as Speed Stacking or Cup Stacking) is a sport in which specially designed cups are stacked in specific patterns as quickly as possible. It has been called a “track meet for your hands” and not only improves eye-hand coordination, but also academic learning. “Students that sport stack on a regular basis have shown increases in test scores and levels of concentration. When students sport stack they are crossing the "midline" of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. These new connections help to spur brain growth which in turn promotes greater academic achievement.” Not only that---SPORT STACKING is FUN! To find out more about Sport Stacking please go to www.speedstacks.com. Mrs. Steinbacher has a selection of Standard Cups and StackMats available for purchase. The Standard Cups may be purchased for $20.00. The StackMats are $25.00. You may purchase a set of Standard Cups and a StackMat for the discounted price of $40.00. There is no tax or shipping charges on your items. You may pay by check made out to “Zion Lutheran School”, or you may pay by cash. Please contact Mrs. Steinbacher at [email protected] with any questions. Our sixth graders are stacking on Thursday at 10:25 until 11:00! Mrs. Steinbacher is still looking for volunteers to help out!
