What a fun filled week we had in 6D! Our first full week has flown by and the kids were awesome. We are now in the FULL SWING of things and the kiddos are doing a great job adjusting! We will definitely perfect it over the coming weeks!
This week we had our first art project. It was line art where you have to draw 5 different lines inside of the project. It's a lot of fun but the tracing is kind of hard. Not much has happened yet this year but something fun will come. We had our first science vocab test. And we read My heart is in the highlands and Greyling by Jane Yolen in literature. We made a bible foldable in religion and we learned about law and gospel. We also learned about the 4 types of sentences and to find the simple subject and simple predicate. ~ Jack and William We now have a full week under our belts and a sense of how classes and transitions go. We are getting better each and every day with these things along with organization and turning in homework. They also are understanding and learning the importance of responsibility and what it means to be a sixth grade student at Zion. These kids absolutely love their classroom jobs and being helpers whenever possible! They have been such a great help for when things start to get crazy! On Wednesday, we were able to to complete our first lab about Static Electricity! The kids experimented with static electricity and charge as they used balloons, spoons, salt and pepper, and paper. They would charge the balloons or spoons by rubbing them on felt, plastic wrap, or...their hair! They learned that some objects were attracted to the charged objects while others repelled. Ask them about it! It was great! (Pics below) Scholastic Book Orders: One book order was sent home today! Check out their Friday folders if you are looking for it. If students are interested in books, orders will be due September 16th, by 5pm. Our class code is: R6TZX. PTL Parent Education Night: Zion PTL is sponsoring a Parent Education Night! Please join us to learn some information about how trauma can affect learning and the brain and how schools and families can be informed as students return to the classroom.

From Mr. Debrick: Let me start by letting you know it has been great to see your kids every day. As we've completed our first full week of school we are getting the chance to see all of our new procedures in action. As promised, we are constantly evaluating them for the betterment of our students, families, and staff. One area that has stood out and we are asking for assistance with, is communication revolving around everything COVID-19. Please make sure to notify the school office anytime you experience something COVID related. By this I mean the following:
Thank you so much for your continued cooperation with us as we strive to provide the safest environment we can and foster a joy for learning.

This week was exciting but hectic to everybody. Between wearing masks all day and eating lunch in the classrooms. So far sixth grade is exciting! ~ Abby D
Those three days went by quick! We did a lot of learning and growing together as a class. I think we started the year off with success! We addressed the elephant in the room and have been talking about wearing masks, being distant, washing hands A LOT, and keeping our loved ones safe. It takes practice! We had a chance to share our frustrations and worries, but also the excitement to be back together as a Zion family. The kids have a good attitude! And we know God is in control. I am so happy to be with your kids! They have been wonderful and very respectful! We started our year off by focusing on our school theme: Psalm 118:1 - Oh give thanks unto the Lord for He is good! For His steadfast love endures forever. Here is what we did this week! Wednesday: Came in nervous, left with smiles. We had virtual chapel which was a fun and unique experience. Afterwards, we played games, got acquainted with Jr. High rules and expectations, and asked lots of questions. We are getting into our routine already! I love it! Thursday we started getting into the swing of how our classes will work this year. To the 6th graders' surprise, they did receive some homework that day! We love our first recess time that is new this year! Friday was even more structured but with plenty of fun things to learn about. The kids started a real English and Science class. It looked they were enjoying themselves, even in SCHOOL! NEW TO SIXTH GRADE: One of our big goals in 6th grade is for students to become more independent in their learning. This news blog will update you on current happenings, but in 6th grade we no longer publish spelling words, memory assignments, or tests in the parent news. These are things your child will be tracking in their assignment book. If an individual student needs more organizational help, I will work one-on-one with that student. I plan to publish this blog weekly on the weekends. Here are a few units: Religion - Discovering God and the Bible (see Religion tab above) G and T Math - Place Value and review of basic skills Social Studies - Map skills Literature - Comparing Fiction and NonFiction English - The Sentence Science - Electricity Parent Helpers: Please let me know ASAP if you would like to be a room parent or a prayer parent. It will look differently this year but we could still use your help! I can send you more information personally if you are interested in either of these options. Thanks! Parent Questions: Don't forget to check out the "Parent Questions" Google doc and add any questions of your own. We will answer them as quickly as possible and use this doc throughout the year. SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS: Be on the lookout for Scholastic book orders! I will be placing the first order on September 16th at 5pm so be sure to get those in before then! Our class code is: R6TZX Reminder: Please wear a mask at dismissal if you wait outside of your car! Overall, a fantastic three days. I love learning about your kids and I think the kiddos are having fun too! Have a FABULOUS weekend! Assignment Sheet - click me! 5 days! 5 days! I hope your kids are just as excited as I am for the start of a new school year! I video chatted with them over the last few weeks and asked if they were excited to go back and most of them said yes! They miss their friends and deep down, I bet they miss their school too. I know I do! I have been getting ready for this unique year over the last two weeks. I definitely feel ready for week 1 and for all of the new procedures and routines in place. I told each 6th grader that this year, we start each day with a fresh new start and to not be too nervous because we are all in the same boat! We are one big team and will work through things together. It will be a fun filled year! Forms: As mentioned earlier, I have some Google Forms I need parents to fill out BY MONDAY, AUGUST 17. They are in the "Forms and Documents" tab but for your convenience, I have copied them here too :) Please fill them out!
